On the Path Towards Independence

Between the First and Second Continental Congress meetings, many things happened to increase tension between the Colonists and the Crown. Things such as Lexington/Concord, Bunker Hill, and Battle of Dorchester Heights. These three items seemed to suggest that War between America and Great Britain was a sure thing. As these things were going on, it appeared quite obvious to some that there was no turning back. The Second Continental Congress decided to form a committee to write a document declaring Indepedence from Great Britain. One man was instrumental in raising support for this cause. His name was Thomas Paine. Paine wrote and published a book called "Common Sense" which we have discussed in class. At first, Paine published this book anonymously. For this blog post, we are going to look at Paine's "Common Sense" and the Declaration of Indepdence itself.

Task #1: Why was Thomas Paine's book "Common Sense" so important? What did it do? Why do you think Paine published "Common Sense" anonymously at first? What made this book so popular among the colonists? Do you think that most colonists would have supported Indepednece without "Common Sense" ? Answer all questions I have just posed.

Task #2: The Declaration of Indepdence, written and published by white males, officially announced our break from Great Britain and our quest for Independence. However, the Declaration of Indepdence excluded a few groups of people such as Native Americans, African Americans, and Women. Why was that? How come these groups of people, groups of people who had many people in the thirteen colonies, get excluded from the Declaration? In a document based on equality and individual rights, did it "miss the boat" with these other groups of people?

1.He aargues for America to have its on indepdance. To get america indepnedance and to be free from great britain so he doesnt have to pay taxes. Because he was one of them and it was for freedom and they wanted freedom from great britain so they wont have to follow all the acts that the british made. No because it wouldnt be easy to get independance.

2.Because they thought the native americans werent as important and african americans were their slaves so they didnt want them to be a part of it cause they thought they were better then them and the women couldnt do any of that stuff back then it was just against their ways. Because they thought they were better than everyone else so they didnt want them to be a part of it cause it was against tradition

Thomas Paine's book "Common Sense" explained what was going on in a way that everyone can understand. It got people thinking about whats going on. He published it anonymously at first so that he wouldn't be killed for writing it. It was popular among the colonists because they agreed with what he said. I don't think that they would have supported Independence without it, otherwise every thing would have gone on and most of them would be uninformed or misinformed.
The reason many people at the time were not included in the constitution was because at the time they weren't considered important, they didn't think that these people mattered very much and it wasn't a big deal not to include them.

1. I think Common Sense is very important because it told the colonists and people what exactly was going on in a way that they could understand. It got people interested in the problems. He published it anonymously because that was a very bold idea and if the King and Queen found out who did it, he would be killed. It was popular because the colonists could understand it. I dont think they would have supported independacne becauase they wouldnt have know what was going on.

2.The Declaration of Independence excluded Native and African Americans and women I think because they werent really involved with what was going on at the time. The men who wrote the Declaration didnt feel that it was important to include them or that they werent important enough.

1. Thomas Paine's book was important because it changed the way people thought of the war and helped the "common" people understand what was happening. He had the book published anonymously at first because he didn't want anybody to get angry at him. I don't think that some people would've still supported Independece, but with common sense it definetly helped raise that number because more people realized that what the king was doing was wrong.

2. Since the Dec. of Ind. was by all white men and wrote it about equality and individual rights you would think it would include EVERYONE but it didn't. I think the Native Americans, African Americans and Women were left out because at the time in history only men were important or at least more important; many other events in history also exclude these groups of people because of this thinking that white men were of greater importance.

1. It inspired the patriots. The British might try to kill him. No. Some might of still supported Indepednece, but not as many.
2.They thought that they were more important. Thought that they were inferior. Yes they should of included them to.

1.I think it was very important because it helped the colinist really think about what was happening and use common sense. It also helped them speak out to the British. He first published it anonymously because he thought that many people would rebell against him. It was poputar becasue it helped them realize what mistakes they were making. I think that aventually it would have happened but not for a while..

2. Because there were focasing on one thing at the time and getting their freedom. They were not thought of and they were not important at this time. Yes, these other people have a say in it to and they were exclutted and that is mean.

1. The book common sense explained stuff to everyone in a way that they could understand it. Because he didnt want people to get mad about it and take it out on him. No, some could have still suported Indpendance.

2.They thought that they were more important than the others and better. I think that they should have included everyone, that would have had less conflict.

1. it was important because realize what was happening the war. When common sense was published it was first published anonomysly because he thought people wouldn't like it and come after him. common sense helped the colinists realize all the mistakes they were making.

2. they thought they were better than the rest of the people. they should have included everyone because then people might not have gotten upset.

1. Because it was talking about what was happening. Because he didnt want the everybody to know how was telling everybody what was happening. No because they wouldnt know what was happening in the war and the colonys.

2. Because at first they didnt think that women and other cultures were as smart as white men were. Yeah because then it brought up another problem.

1. i think Thomas Paine wrote the book common sence because it would change peoples thoughts of the Revolutionary War. i also think that Thomas published the book anonymously because he thinks that they might get mad and beat him up. i think that the book was so famous because it gave them hope that they might win. i dont think that they would support the war that much but some people would still support it.

2. i think that they excluded the natives, women adn africans because other countries might get mad at them and have to respect for the americans. i think that the 13 colonies got excluded out because the guys who wrote we selfish.i think that it did miss the boat with the people.

And so I strike, like a sudden storm at a kindergarten picnic! -Dimentio-

Task #1
1.(Why his book was important) Because it made Common Sense!
2.(What did it do) It showed the colonists that they could fight back at the British.
3.(Why anonymously) So that he would not be arrested by the British
4.(Why so popular) They figured, "Hey, we really can stop these British from moving into our homes, forcing us taxes, and get back at them for Boston Harbor!"
5.(Independence) Eventually, but it would have been much later in time.

Task #2
1.(Why no women, NA, or AA) Because they didn't bother to think of them, they just thought about how they wanted independence.
2.(Exclusion) Because the Continental Congress didn't have time for them.
3.(Miss the boat) Basically, yes. The Continental Congress just wanted to get on with it and didn't think about the women, Native Americans, or African Americans.

Ciao! -Dimentio-

1. Common Sense was important because it stated what the Declaration of Indepdence stated but in a simpler form of words so that the "common people" would be able to understand it. I think that Paine was scared that he would be caught and put in prison for a long time so he didn't put his name on the book. The colonists liked the book because they could understand it rather than hearing all this nonsense mass of words that make no sense to them. I think that the colonists would not have understood the Declaration of Indepdence with out Common Sense because many of the people didn't understand what it was saying.
2. The white males who officially announced our break were just following the way things were done back in the day. The colored people were slaves as many people thought they should be and the women didn't have many say in what they could or couldn't do. So I conclude that the white men were just following the code of business back in the day.

1. It was important because this helped Pennsylvania and South Carolina seek independence and this led to the Revolutionary war. It was also important to tell the colonist what was going on. It was popular because it told the colonist what was going on and what they were doing wrong.
2. The Declaration of Independence didn't include women and native americans i think because the people that wrote it didn't think they were important enough to do it.

1. It helped pennsylaviniia and south carolina get independance and it lead to the war it was important tp tell the colonist what was gunna happen.
2. These people were not important enough or high enough in the standards to be put in it

1. Thomas Paine's book "Common Sense" was written so that all the People, rich, poor, high in class, and low could read this pamphlet to understand what Great Britain was doing. Thomas Paine didn't want to get into trouble to begin with, so he concealed his identity until the war started. The pamphlet must have become more and more popular because almost everyone was getting tired of all the taxes, and were ready to fight for freedom. I also do not think that as many people would have supported Independence because this pamphlet was filled with propaganda, saying to everyone that Great Britain was bad, and they needed to break away from them.
2. The Native Americans, African Americans, and Women were excluded from the Decleration of Indipendence for many reasons. African Americans were not in the Dec. of Ind. because the Southern states used slaves, and wouldn't support the cause of indipendence. Native Americans were not in the Dec. of Ind. also because they were fighting for Great Britain against the Colonies. Women were excluded then because the men didn't think that the women were as smart as the men, so figured that they weren't needed in the rights.
