Indentured Servitude: What does it mean?

The Facts: Indentured Servants are people who had their trip to America from Europe paid for by someone. Once in America, the person had to work for 7 years without getting paid to pay off their trip or "debt" to the person who paid for it. Despite the facts, there are questions about what Indentured Servitude is, exactly. Is it Slavery? Is it an opportunity? It is an interesting question. A question you will be thinking about, writing about, and reading about. Though the article talks about indentured servants coming from Europe to Canada, its the same principles as indentured servants going to American colonies.

Your task is this: Read the following article about Indentured Servitude. After reading the article respond to the questions below.

1. The early goal in the America's was not British Settlement, however, they soon realized that the best way to protect their "real estate" was to do what?

2. The trip across the Atlantic was expensive. Only the rich could afford it. Therefore, the "wrong" type of people were coming to the Americas. What does it mean by the "wrong" type of people? What type of people were needed? Why?

3. Farmers, blacksmiths, and innkeepers all needed apprentices to learn the trade in America. In Europe, the Industrial Revolution caused huge job loss, homelessness and crime. How did these factors contribute to indentured servitude? How did indentured servitude help this problem?

4. What does "debt slaves" mean?

5. There are many angles as far as who became indentured servants. Discuss the different ways people (or kids) would find themselves in indentured servitude.

6. Share your opinion. Is Indentured Servitude slavery? Is it an opportunity? Is it welfare? Is it a business move? Support your opinion with at least 4 points.

DUE: In-class blogging. If you do not get finished, it will be homework.
Points: 40 Points

the poor people asked the rich people to pay for their way and then they would have to work for them for 7 years and the people that payed for them got 50 acres. the wrong people were the people that came here for 50 acres. it helped out with the economy and stuff like that. a debt slave was a person that did a crime and had to work for someone for however years he was sentenced to. they were poor and they wanted to go to amaerica so they asked a rich person to take em there and he got 50 acres for every person he brought and they had to work for him for seven years either out in the field or around the house. It was fair for both people because they got to go to america and the person that paid for them got 50 acres more of land and its not a business move

To trade and interact with the English.
I think what you mean by the "wrong" type of people as in the I guess...softer people? They were richer, so they hadn't had to do any hard work in there lives. There for, they shouldn't have came to a place were they would have had to work.
Those factors contributed because they needed more workers, and people were ready to get out of England.
Debt slaves means to be a slave to debt. Like, they were slaves, almost, because they didn't get paid. But they sort of did because they kind of all got payed at the beggining.
Well, like you said there are gazzillions of ways to get into it. I think some of the ways are--You could wantto leave the crouded streets of England. Take your family to another place were I'm sure they made sound fantastic. & it was better than working in factorys. Some ways children could get into it is if they had been in Child Labor, but had ran away, I know that they were considered fellons. Or if they were living on the Streets, or if there Family had went.
I think its all of the above. It's deffinatly an oppertunity to find a new place to live...but they also didn't get payed. And it can most certanily be a buissness. In the end people always want to make money.

1)The best way to protect their real estate was to hire people to do sertan things.
2)The wrong type of people where the not rich people the people needed where strong men and women that can take care of things the men where needed to swing an axe and do the hard work.
3)the people who lost jobs and everything needing this thing helped them because the ones with out jobs could come over and farm of anything else they needed

1. They thought that the best way to protect there real estate was to populate it.

2. By the "wrong" people they ment the people who couldn't afford to pay for there trip. If someone needed the rich to pay for them the would have to be an indentured sevent.

3. They needed to get to Ontario in the New World.

1)They relized that they had to populate it. There land was just sitting there and not being farmed. They need workers.
2)It means that the people that did not want to work and were very lazy. They needed people that were willing to work hard and move the new world forward.
3) It helps have many people need work and want to go to the new world.
4) That they did have the rich pay for their way over and they were in debt to them and were kind of like a slave.
5) Farming, making food, tending to the rich, making houses
6) I dont think that is is slavery or and opportunity. It is welfare because you will be in the new world and have a job and once you are done with your debt you can go back to living freely. If you are treated bad then you are kind of being put in slavery. You had your way payed for and so you just had to work to get the money earned back. I think that 7 years was a little much but I guess that is what the wage was back then. I am kind of in that state now to because I am going to D.C. and i have to help around the house to earn a payment to go but my parents just put that payment into my account for that.

1. To get info. about the land earn money to stay there.
2. People that could not afford to go were going by having the rich pay fo them. The poor or the Africans for the 50-acers to work to work on the farm.
3. It aloud the people to get the ride across the Alantic to the americans. They had more workers who they did not have to pay.
4. It means the they are slaves for number of days or years or until they can pay off there debt.
5. They wanted to go to the Americas or they already worked for them but there master was moving.
6. I would soy that it is because it is very close. no. yes.

1. To protect their settlement they needed to go back to England to populate their settlements. So they got together the people that couldnt afford to pay their way over and if they had good skills the rich would pay for them, andn they would have to become an indenutred servant for the person who paid their way for the next 7 years.

2. It was the wrong type of people because the rich thought they were too good to work so they didnt and nothing got worked on in the fields. So therefore the indentured servents that they paid there way for shouldhave been the ones to go over, that is why they were indentured servents because they had good skills to work.

3. It contributed to indentured servents because the apprentices learned their skill, and then they could become and indentured servent when ones time was up. If the rich did something for them they would become a indentured servent. Shipping them to the colonies was a solution.

4. Debt slaves is another phrase to describe the arrangement, especially in the case of prisoners and youth who had no choice and no other opportunity to repay the debt.

5. Kids would become them if their parent were indentured servents becuase they were related. It people had good work skills and wanted to move over to Americas they would get a rich person to pay thier way and they would have to work for them.

6. Yes i think it is a form of slavery because you are making someone work for you without pay. It is though an oppurtunity because if people wanted to get away from the conditions of their country they could come over. They could get food if they were to poor to buy. But i do think that they are forcing them too work so i think it is bad.

The best way to protect there real estate is that not to tell anyone from England.
There were wronge people because they were rich and were not going to do the work.
The indentured servitude contrivute to lose jobs because they were more workers. They also helped though because of the industial revolution because they helped the army.
dept slaves mean you didn't pay the person that owned the slave's so you are in debt for that moment.
I think you would come a indensured servent by someone paying for your trip to a place but you have to work for them over on that trip.
I dont't think that Indentured servitue is slavery because he payed your way and you had a deal.

1. They soon realized the best way to protect their "real estate was to populate it.
2.They were the wrong type of people because they didn't want to do work. They needed strong hard working people.
3. This contributed to indentured servitude because the jobless wanted to go to America where the money was being made, so the rich payed for there trip there if they would work for them for 7 years. It helped out because the homeless had a place to live and the jobless could work and live there.
4. Some one who works for free to get rid of there debt.
5. You could find yourself as an indentured servant if you were an orphan and had no where to go, if you lived in a big family one child might have to work as an indentured slave, or if someone else paid for your trip to America.
5. Indentured Servants were not slaves, they had a contract between them stateing that they were to work for that time. Sometimes it was needed, people needed places to live. It was only a way of repaying someone. They were only there to repay what they owed.

1. England figured out that if someone pays for someone elses passage to the New World, then that person works for the person that payed their way to the New World. So no one would would be robbed, and everyone would be happy.
2. The rich people didn't have a clue how to farm, so nothing was being grown. The wrong people were the rich, cause they couldn't farm, but the poor were actually the farmers. Pretty ironic, I think.
3. No one could afford to get to the New World, so indentured Servants were created so that the poor could get to the New World too. The indentured servants would eventually work for the 7 years, and be able to become apprentices.
4. A debt slave is, the Indentured Servant. they were called debt slaves, because they had to work with no pay. So they got the name, "debt slave."
5. Some people would find themselves indentured servants becasue they had no where else to go. They had no jobs, no family, nothing, so had to become indentured servants.
5.Indentured Servitude isn't slavery, because the person that is the indentured slave chose to become the slave type. It's they person's fault that they wind up in that position, not the rich peoples. So yes, Indentured Servitude is a very good bussiness move until everyone begins to leave the plantation.

1. They thought the best way to protect their real estate was to populate it with people.

2. By wrong they ment that they needed people who were willing to work and people that knew how to farm, otherwise they wouldn't be able to get any food.

3. It gave the homeless people a place to live for a while and it would bring the population of homeless people down too.

4. It means when a person who can't afford to pay their way into America has someone who can afford to go to America pays for the person to live there, IF they work for them for 3-7 years for free to pay off the debt.

5. They would become one if the parents didn't have enough money, or if someone had a farm they could become an indentured servent.

6. I personally don't think that indentured servitude is slavery because I just think of it as returning the favor in a way.
It could be a business move i guess but I don't really think of it that way.

1. They realized that the best way to protect thier real estate was to enlarge the population.

2. When they say that the "wrong" type of people were coming they mean that the rich, who could afford it, were not the ones who would do any labor. So that means that the poor/lower class people that couldn't afford it were the ones who were willing to work; but if they can't come across the Atlantic they didn't have many workers. So that is why they started Indentured Servitude.

3. These factors of job loss, homelessness and crime contributed to indentured servitude because so many people were destitude that they were willing to work as a slave for the rich. It also was a bonus on Europe's side as well, it got rid of some of the "extra" people because they were going to America.

4. "Debt slaves" means that the indentured servant still owed the owner money and had to work until it was "payed off."

5. The reasons on how people and sometimes kids became indentued servants varies from situation to situation. However, many were because there were no "Poor Laws" and so the poor were not supported by the wealthy. There were many cases in which a family had too many kids to support and had to give them away to a wealthy man, or because a farmer's family didn't have enough land to hand down to his children so they had to become an indentured servant.

6. After reading this article about Indentured Servitude i think is was more of an opportunity than slavery. The owner was required to keep them alive, so that means they had to have had clothes, food, and most likely a home. By saying that it doesn't mean that all owners were mean, some treated their debt slaves courtesly. This probably was nowhere close to being a way of welfare either considering how hard they worked and how long, seven years is awfully long. Indentured servitude was a good way to fix the American problem of not having many workers and getting the towns populated.

1. to populate it.

2. workers were needed to do work that rich people would not do.

3. it tught them how to do work. they also learned how to do specific jobs.

4. it means indentured servants wich is some one who can't afford to go to america so a rich person pays there wau for a lage amount of work.

5. there are a wide range of people who could be a debt slave. homless, poor, and the farmers.

6. no it is an opportunity that I personally would have taken.yes it is a busness move. you get to got to a hole new world. I think thatit is something the average hobo would have taken

3. They worked for people insed of causing crimes.

4. They work for someone for 7 years.

5. For being poor.

6. I think it is paying back the person for hat they did. It might be like slavery. Its an opptunity to go to america. Its having a job.

3. It got all of the homeless people off the streets and got them a job to buy stuff instead of stealing it.

4. Debt slaves is another way to describe the place, in the case of prisoners and youth who had no choice and no other opportunity to repay the debt.

5.Couples with many children might make aggangements for a child to be indertured. Also farmers unabel to provid farms for al his kids might have one or more of them induntured to a large land owner.

One half of the white setterlers o in North America were indentured sevrnts.

6.I think that it is slavory. Why do I think it is slavory? Because I think its wrong, to have people work for no pay. Wouldnt you agree?

1. They protected there real estate by having people move there.
2. They needed farmers and people that could take care of themselves and provide for others Instead of the rich people that didn't know how to work and survive.
3. It leaded to more people going to america for jobs. It gave the Farmers, blacksmiths, and innkeepers apprentices.
4. It means that people that cant pay there way across have to work for the person that paid their way across for 7 years.
5. If they got there way paid for or if they didn't have a job or any where to go.
6. It isn't slavery because they are working for money to pay their debt off so they are getting paid but they don't know it. It is a business move also because the rich are trying to find people that need to have their trip paid for and there was alot of people that needed their trip paid for so it was a smart business move.

1. To populate it.

2. The wrong type of people are the rich, lazy people. they needed the storng, hardowrking people, because of all the work that needed to be done.

3. It gave the people w/o homes a place to stay for 7 years to work it off.

4. They are indentured servants, which are people that were paid for to get to the new world. They had to work for 7 years as payment.

5. People with large families, and families that couldn't feed them all would give away some of their children.

6.I think indentured servitude is a type of slavery, but also an opportunity. They have to work for an owner for 7 years. They do hard work day-in, day-out. They also get to see a new world that was reently discovered. Finaly once they were done with their 7 years, they could work for themselves for a living and make much money.

6. I'd say it is a way of slavery
1. They have to work for some one
2. They had no pay.
3. Worked all day with no or little breaks.
4. Did not get very much food for them selvs.

1. They had to populate it. Their farms were just empty so they need people to far for them. They were to lazy to do it.
2. It means they were lazy, they needed people to do their work.
3. Many people needed work and wanted to go to the New World.
4. The rich payed for their trip to the New World so when the rich needed people to work for them they told the people they paid for to work for them for 7 years.
5. They had to farm, make food, probably be rich people's servant, and make houses.
6. - I don't think the people they paid for to go to the New World to work for them for 7 years I think thats to much
- I think some poeple went to the Americas for business, so they could grow tabacco and it is very popular in Europe so they just sold it to them.
- I think it is an opportunity for the rich to come and see the New World and give them a chance to get even more rich.
- My opinion is that they should not have the people they paid for to work for them for 7 years and my other opinion is that I think the rich went to America to get more rich and have a chance to go to the new world.
